Today was our first day of milling logs on site. Our primary goal is to see if we can get about 40 decent 6x8 beams cut for our 2nd floor joists. In addition, we need lots of 3/4" material for the exterior gable walls, 1/2" siding to finish the interior gable walls, and more framing lumber. Jillena came out for a bit to work on the doors. In the evening, Jeff finished the basement insulation. click here for more pics |

Another day of log milling, though colder than yesterday. Dave, the mill operator, Bob, John, Jeff, and Jillena were all helping today.

More milling on this snowy day. We got quite a few additional beams cut, but we still need more to have enough for the 2nd floor.

Today we got quite a few more beams out of our leftover logs. Some had too much rot that they could only be milled for smaller lumber. We also started making kerf cuts in the ends of some beams which we'll need later. Ted and Bob were inside with the laser level marking the 2nd floor beam height.

Jeff went out on this bitter cold evening to cover the front door opening with plastic. This should hold the heat in a bit more on the 1st floor. He also took some pictures of the lumber we've cut and brought inside.

This is the last weekend for milling logs into beams. We only have a few logs left that have a large enough diameter to give us the 6x8 dimensions we need. For some of these logs, we just barely got our 6x8 dimensions. We also discovered we'd have to cut off some rot near the ends.

Since we got all the beams we were going to get from our logs, we cut up a few other miscellaneous logs we had laying around into board and batten material.
