Today was a log cleaning day. Jeff and Jillena went over most of the freshly-chinked wall, cleaning mortar residue off the logs.

Jeff went out tonight to tear down all the scaffolding and set up two double towers - one on the north wall and one on the south wall. Earlier in the week, Bob had cut some notches in the south wall for the 2nd floor beam brackets.

With the west wall complete, Jillena moved around to the south wall. Bob and Jeff prepped a few beams for the mill and we did some cleanup outside around the house.

Jillena made great progress on her insulation and lath today. Jeff cut notches in the log walls for the electric outlet boxes, and nailed a threshold plate extension outside the side door. He also took the first 6 brackets for our 2nd floor beams over to our friend Rusty's house to drill bolt holes in them.

After a morning at the mill, Bob was up on the scaffolding, finishing off the rows Jillena has been working on. Jeff was busy installing more outlet boxes and wiring.

Yesterday, Jillena did more work on the chinking preparation on the south wall while Jeff finished off the side door.

This picture shows the more detailed work Jillena has been doing on the inside versus what we did on the outside. Some areas, where the blue foam board or spray foam protrudes into the gap a ways, get just batting insulation, while other gaps that have more room get batting and an additional layer of blue board.

4-8-11

Another chinking day, but not with a full crew. We only worked on a small section today. This is the area on the south wall where we'll be setting 2nd floor beams soon, so we wanted to get the joints from the top of the wall down to below the beam bracket notches chinked. We were afraid that setting the beams first might just get in the way of chinking later. We completed this section with just Jeff, Jillena, and Bob as the chinkers.

More chinking today, this time on the north wall. We concentrated efforts on the west half so we could have the scaffolding out of the way to set the 2nd floor beams in this area next. It was Jeff, Jillena, and Bob as the chinkers again today.

4-16-11

Jillena was busy washing the logs around the area we chinked yesterday. She then moved to the east half of the south wall to work on insulation and lath, and helped the guys with beam raising.

4-17-11

Jillena was back at work on the insulation and lath on the south wall while Jeff did some notching in the RPSL's for the next set of beams.

4-18-11

Guess who was working on insulation and lath again today. It's one of the most boring and time-consuming jobs we have to do, but it has to be done, and we're all quite happy Jillena has made this her project. Jeff, Bob, and John spent the day prepping many of the beams for raising tomorrow.

4-29-11

A little bit each day. Jillena is almost finished with the area she's been working on lately. Jeff and Bob were progressing on some beam and framing work.

4-30-11

Jillena is winding down on the chink-prepping work in the SE corner. With spring turkey season starting tomorrow, we caught some interesting behavior in our back field.

Jillena decided to work at floor level today, concentrating on the back wall of the laundry room. Paul was back today for the first time in over a year and helped Bob and Jeff start the rough plumbing.

5-19-11

Jillena put in a few hours during the afternoon today in preparation for chinking tomorrow.

5-20-11

Paul, Bob, and Jillena were the primary chinking crew today. Jeff was on patch duty outside. It started out rainy in the morning, and we had little desire to mix mortar in the rain, but the rain stopped by late morning. We got a pretty decent amount of chinking done today - most importantly, the kitchen area (shown left). Now, Bob can build a short wall under the window behind the sink.

5-22-11

Jillena cleaned mortar residue off the logs from our chinking two days ago. Outside, John was running the excavator, breaking up the many piles of dirt that have been too wet to work with lately. Things are just beginning to dry out a bit.

5-27-11

Jillena was working below the 2nd floor beams today. Bob built the half-wall along the log wall of the kitchen area and Jeff ran more wiring.

Jillena continued below the 2nd floor beams today, while Tom (yes, Tom) helped Jeff run some wiring. As you can see, she quickly tired of Tom's tomfoolery.

6-11-11

Jillena was working on the bottom few rows today, custom-fitting insulation and stapling lath. Jeff replaced a few electric boxes in the log wall with deeper ones. Later, Jillena took a break from the chink-prepping to take down a dead tree in our hedgerow.

6-12-11

Jillena now has everything on the south wall completed except for the bottom two rows in the dining room. Jeff swapped out a few more outlet boxes in the log wall.

6-17-11

A 4-wheel flat dolly came in handy for working on the bottom two rows. Jillena has almost all of the remainder of the back wall finished. Bob adjusted the pocket doors so that the stops could be installed and Jeff wired a few more junction boxes. Later, Jillena, Jeff and Stephen began the removal of the protective film from the windows and put some screens in.

6-18-11

Jillena finished the south dining room wall while Jeff wired a few plastic boxes. John set a concrete slab in front of our front entry door that will be the base for temporary steps.
