FRAMING & DRYWALL

9-11-11

We're using basic rounded stock with a flat bottom for the handrails. Jeff used the table saw to cut 45's on the ends so we could return the handrails to the wall.

Since we have so much scrap wood lying around, Jeff wanted to try making the supports out of wood instead of using the common metal ones from Lowe's. He came up with this final version after three attempts. The pitch cut on the top matches the rise/run of the staircase. That bandage on his finger is covering the little "mishap" he had with the jigsaw on Labor Day. (We decided not to post a picture of that ugly mess.)

Cutting the short return sections on the radial arm saw.   Double holes for the screws that will anchor the supports to the wall. That dark color is not paint, but scorching from the jigsaw as it fought its way through the dense hickory.

The upper staircase rail with the returns at each end, but before adding the supports.   The lower staircase rail complete with returns and supports.

A closeup of one of the supports.   Looking up the staircase from the basement.
