DECK/PORCH
9-28-12

Here's the first log "we" set. After drying out for 5 years, lifting a 7-foot log was a "piece of cake". (Bob volunteered to lift the post while Jeff guided the base with the pre-drilled hole onto the pin.)   For each post location, we first drilled a 1/2" hole down into the 6x6, making sure it was a plumb as possible.

Each hole is about 8" deep.   Jeff tapping in a rebar pin.

For those 6x6 posts that didn't quite poke up past the deck surface, we cut square pressure-treated shims so the log supports would not sit directly on the decking.   Here you can see the first log support set at the far corner, and the rebar pins in the rest of the 6x6's.

We then selected the log sections we wanted along the front of the house and set them on the deck at each pin location.   Before lifting the log support onto the pin, Jeff and Stephen brushed a waterproof stain onto the bottom end grain.
