7-4-12

Today began the installation of the deck boards. Jeff started at the NW corner. We decided on screwing a 2-inch-wide spline down the center of the 45-degree joint to hide any possible misalignment of the deck board sets joining at the corner.

7-23-12

Another evening working on the deck. Tonight, Jeff laid the first row on the east side and moved the north electric outlet up on the door buck.

7-24-12

Today, Jeff finished off the front deck by scribing the last row of boards for a tight fit. Then he moved on to the west deck, finishing off most of it. Bob worked on moving the rear deck rail posts out to the rim joist in order for us to gain more deck depth.

The west deck has just the last row to install next to the house.

7-26-12

Bob worked on installing the two rail posts on the west side that will allow the rear rail to wrap around the side for a few feet. The east side will have to be done the same way eventually. Jeff finished off the west deck.

The rear deck (and therefore, the entire deck) is done!

8-18-12

Now that the deck is finished, we need to build a rail across the rear deck and around the sides for a few feet - any part of the deck that is over 30" above ground. Our plan is to build all of the rail sections first, then secure them between the 4x4 rail posts.

8-25-12

For the past week, Jeff has been installing the rail sections. The corner sections were tricky, as they did not connect at a central post in the corner. We decided to fill the spaces between the spindles with rebar sticks cut from our original supply.

8-26-12

Jeff installed the first of the rebar fillers between the rail spindles tonight. They are painted flat black for rust protection. We weren't sure we'd like the look, but now we're glad we did it.

More of the rebar spindle fillers were put in tonight.

8-31-12

Jeff completed the rebar spindle fillers across the main rail. Just the short east section to finish. We've been getting quite a few loads of sandy dirt lately, which are accumulating in our front yard.

9-7-12

Today we began work on the porch roof ledger. Because the roof will wrap around the house, we had to cut off the first of a few overdangles that would be in the way of the roof line. Bob and Jeff worked on that while John spread some dirt around with the dozer.

9-8-12

The rebar inserts are now finished and Jeff has started installing the 2x6 caps.

9-9-12

The caps are finished, which means the entire railing is finished! The top rail brackets and bolts stuck out too far to allow the caps to sit flush, so Jeff "routed" a depression into the underside of the cap at each end with a circular saw.

9-21-12

We've been making good progress on the ledger, cutting wedges to place behind it in an attempt to keep it plumb when it's bolted tight.
