Jeff set a few base plates for the framed walls, and installed a ledger beam bracket on the west wall. In this pic, the long plate represents the wall separating the bedroom and stairwell. The other two represent temporary walls around the stairwell. We plan to put in log supports and a stairwell to the 2nd floor in the future. When we do, we'll take these walls back out.

Tonight, Jeff tacked up the top plate for the bedroom-stairwell wall. This wall will fall directly under the north girder.

Bob decided to spend a few days this week working on the framing. Today he got the bedroom-stairwell wall completed, as well as the short temporary wall at the end of the stairwell opening.

Bob spent another day on the project by himself, framing up the longer temporary wall, installing the top plate for the other bedroom wall, and starting the east-west wall at the end of the wet wall.

We got a little more framing done today: the wet wall top plate and end studs, and the wall under the girder got its top plate shimmed and secured. Jillena was back on chink-prep duty, and we got a couple of shorter beams set near the stairwell.

Bob worked on the framing again today by himself. This time, he installed all the studs for the kitchen/laundry room wall, and half of the studs for the wet wall.

Another framing day for Bob. Today he finished studding the wet wall and built a temporary half wall at the top of the stairs.

Bob was back again today to work on the bathroom framing. This included some custom work on the top plate of the wall next to the stairwell. Once that was done, he installed the studs on that wall. Jeff went out in the evening to cut notches in some wall logs for the end studs of the perpendicular studded walls.

Bob assembled the header for the wall over the bathroom door and even scribed the end to fit the log wall profile. Then, two short beams got set on top to connect to the south girder. Jillena finished off chink-prepping the SE corner she's been working on, and Jeff was busy installing electric boxes.

Bob drove out today to put up the dimensional 2x10's over the bathroom. These will eventually be hidden by a ceiling. In the evening, Jeff tacked the cross-bracing in place between the joists.

Bob built a short wall against the logs under the kitchen window, scribe-fitting the studs where necessary, whiile Jeff ran more wiring. Jillena has moved below the 2nd floor beams on the south wall, fitting more insulation and stapling lath.

To gain a couple of inches on the pocket door "pocket", Jeff cut notches in the seven lowest logs back to the chinking.

Bob started framing the pockets for our pocket doors by building the baseplates. Paul and Jeff spent most of the day installing the plumbing vent stacks through the roof. Paul also did a little climbing around and re-wired the existing smoke detectors.

Bob made some nice progress today on his own, completing the header and the studs for the pocket entrances.

A long day for Bob. In fact, he was still there when Jeff came out after work. Bob finished the pocket framing and attached the track. Then, he and Jeff hung and leveled the doors. We are so pleased with Bob's work! The doors look great!

Once we realized that these two gadgets (pictured left) were the closing door stops, Bob had to work with the track and trolley adjusters to increase the space between the track and top of the doors so that the stops could be installed properly. Jillena worked on the bottom two rows of the back wall while Jeff wired a few junction boxes.

John brought a concrete slab up to our front door that will serve as the base for temporary steps (not the stump). Inside, Jeff wired a few plastic boxes and Jillena finished up her work on the south dining room wall.

6-21-11

Bob spent the day by himself at the house, building our temporary steps for the front door. He sketched out the plans himself and "threw" these together. We saw them that evening and loved them! What a great job, Bob! And what a great way to wrap up the Spring 2011 Projects section of the website!
