To secure the girders to the support posts, long rebar pins are driven down through the girders and centers of the posts.
Paul takes care of the other end post.

Each girder is supported by 5 posts - two on the ends and 3 spaced out between them. Each of these posts sits on a rebar pin on its pier, just like the outer posts.

Drilling a hole in the center of the post for the rebar pin.

Once the posts are in place and under the girder, a 1/2" hole is drilled through the girder only, directly over the post. Notice that saddle notches are not necessary in the middle posts.

Our makeshift plumb bob shows the post is pretty plumb in this direction.

Paul drives the pin through the girder and into the post. This connection is just like the ones used in the wall construction.

For this post, we had to alter the top surface a bit to get a better fit under the girder.

Taking a knot off the girder with the chainsaw.

Paul on his double ladder driving in the pin for this post.

A wide shot of some of our progress. To the left of the post is our jack post on a bottle jack.

Grinding off a knob on the girder for the last support post.

Propping the post up a little to do some last-minute grinding.

Taking the chainsaw grinder to the top of the post.

With the post now in place, Jeff hands the camera off to Paul so he can drive in the pin.

The support post in this location had to be replaced because of a "miscalculation" in the post height. It was 2" too short. So Paul and Jeff took it out and put another one in its place. With the girder lifted off the post, Paul does a little fine grinding to make sure the bottom surface of the girder rested on the trough of the saddle notch. Otherwise, we risk splitting the post.

A near perfect fit.

Our favorite visitors surprised us again today.
